Fighter Wing 71 "Richthofen" is stationed at Wittmundhafen Airbase in East Frisia. At the 43rd anniversary of the death of Freiherrn Manfred von Richthofen, worldwide known as the „Red Baron“ und Flying Ace of WW I, the wing was awarded with the heritage name "Richthofen" in 1961.

 

The F-4F Phantom was flown at Wittmund AB from 1974 to 2013.

Fighter Wing 72 “Westfalen” was stood up using the resources of the former Fighter Bomber Wing 36 “Westfalen” and was stationed at Hopsten AB north of Münster in Westphalia. As a result of the tight relationship with its host region the wing received the honorable name of “Westphalia” (Westfalen) already in 1984. This honor was also transferred to the new wing when it was stood up.

 The F-4F Phantom was flown at Hopsten AB from 1975 until 2005.

Fighter Wing 73 “Steinhoff” was established at the former East German base Laage near Rostock and the Baltic Sea in 1995.
The heritage name was awarded to the wing in 1997 in remembrance of the former chief of the German Air Force and WW II ace, LtGen Johannes Steinhoff. Under his leadership the Luftwaffe recovered from the so-called Starfighter Crisis in the late 1960ies.

The F-4F Phantom was flown at Laage from 1997 until 2002. Its Crest und Phantom aircraft were taken over from the decommissioned Fighter Bomber Wing 35 at Pferdsfeld AB.

Fighter Wing 74 is stationed at Neuburg AB near Neuburg at the Danube River in Bavaria. At the anniversary of the death of Colonel Werner Mölders, a famous Fighter Ace of WW II, the wing was awarded its heritage name “Mölders” in 1973. This was revoked by Parliament decision in 2005.

The F-4F was flown at Neuburg from 1974 until 2008.
